Is Snippet Saturday an actual thing? No. But I have admitted this isn't a WIP, and it's not really exactly a whole fic, but it stands on its own well enough to post, so here it is. Lan Xichen & Song Lan mostly, with a little Lan brothers angst thrown in,  LXC POV.

As I don't fandom on Twitter, I'll put this WIP Wednesday snippet here. I have been writing, sporadically and jumping back and forth between about 5 different things (variously for Untamed and Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty), but I'll take what I can get at this point.

This fic appears to be shaping itself into some post-canon Sangcheng, in which NHS has had it:

(Cross-posting this from Tumblr, because I'm not really sure where this fandom is actually localized, and thinking about this has been amusing me all day, so why not share in as many places as possible? This may be the closest I come to actually writing fic for this fandom, given my current ability to brain.)

I’ve been seeing a lot of The Romance of Tiger and Rose gifs on my dash, (which I haven’t yet watched any of,) and now I’ve got all these Untamed AU thoughts, where WWX is an overworked screenwriter who portal-fantasies his way into the world of the show he was working for and comes to being addressed as Yiling Laozu, a character who has never actually appeared on the show because he was just written as part of Hanguang-jun’s tragic backstory.

(What would the plot of the show without WWX as the focus even be? Maybe LWJ’s years of showing up in places of chaos, so it’s kind of an angsty period drama procedural thing? And WWX had been doing his best to thread through some hints at a larger political conspiracy in the background to take the show to the next level, but maybe the producer hadn’t been too interested or something, so he’s only managed to do it really subtly.)

So anyway, he wakes up in the world of the show, has some hilarious moments of figuring out who he’s supposed to be, and tries his best to avoid all the main characters of the show because he’s not sure what will happen if he starts interacting with the main plot. But he inevitably ends up in a situation where he has to use magic to save himself and the juniors, which means he gets his hand on a flute... and he’s awful, just awful. His voiceover internal thoughts: “I knew this character was a blatant self-insert when I wrote him, why didn’t I give him an instrument I can actually play?!”

So then LWJ has to show up to save them and is of course very shocked to see his long-lost love alive again, which is all very dramatic (and complicated by the massive crush WWX has on the actor irl, probably, because why would we ignore this chance for meta comedy?) and then I assume they start actually following the political intrigue plot WWX had been trying to write into the show.

Someone else pick this up and run with it, because I really want to read it!

You know what I've decided because there's no actual show canon proving definitively that it's *not* true? Wen Qing didn't die. Just like they didn't actually cremate Wen Ning, they also didn't kill and cremate her. She was too valuable as a doctor to waste, so she was kept hidden away. She escaped, of course, and is out there living life under some other name. I don't know who found her/how she escaped, but that's fine, I just like knowing she's out there. (Maybe it was a Nie Huaisang sideplot we never learned about; he clearly had a lot of other irons in the fire that were never touched on.) Anyway, I just need at least one other woman besides Mianmian to have survived, and Wen Qing definitely deserved better.

I've been accumulating bookmarks for over a week now, and rather than continuing to just trade them back and forth with individual friends, I think it's time for a list of favorites.

Canon-compliance:

long way home series by idrilka - I will follow idrilka into any fandom. This series is why I knew I would eventually end up watching the show, and it was the first thing I read as soon as I was done with the last episode. Post-canon (show w/a little bit of book detailing) continuation perfection.

The Absolutely True Story of the Yiling Patriarch: A Manifesto in Many Parts by aubreyli - The juniors undertake to rehab Wei Wuxian's reputation and inadvertently end up writing a sweeping epic love story. Nie Hauisang, patron of the arts, decides to help. Hilarity ensues.

aubade and flourish by annundriel - annundriel doing what she does best: sensual slice-of-life moments in time

A Civil Combpaign by ariaste - Jin Ling proves himself to be a true product of his parenting in his attempts to woo Lan Sizhui. Fortunately he has one uncle with slightly better romantic advice.

Joy in the Midst of These Things by Glitterbombshell - In which Wei Wuxian becomes the best baby juniors teacher Cloud Recesses has ever seen, much to Lan Qiren's anguish.

Gathered Herbs & Sweet Grasses by hansbekhart - Lan Sizhui growing up with Lan Wangji. Sweet and sad and poignant.

Inquiry by incendir - Another Lan Sizhui POV on his years growing up with LWJ; the title is a clue about the emotionality here. (Kicks off a very long series with a lot of outsider POV on the Wangxian relationship, gets a lot more into book!WWX being in Mo Xuanyu's body now.)

花无百日红; the flower that withers by yiqie - Post-canon case fic in which a time travel spell sends LWJ and WWX back through the events of canon to try to forgive/understand their younger selves. Be prepared for emotions.

AUs:

Marriage Principles series by Fahye - Canon divergence where Wangxian are betrothed from childhood, where the divergence does that cool thing where it sends out ripples through all of canon and prevents a lot of tragedy. My personal favorite thing is that it prevents Jin Guangyao from going full dark side, so we get a brief moment of an unholy alliance of understanding between him and Nie Huaisang. First fic is Wangxian, second fic is Xiyao.

what else is there? by mme_anxious - Super well-done swan princess AU, with LWJ as they one who gets transformed.

through a window softly by impossibletruths - Modern music grad students who practice music/riff off each other/flirt anonymously from their respective balconies in the same apartment complex. Everything's good and nothing hurts, wonderful characterization, hits all my personal buttons.

Love wakes me by dea_liberty - Modern coffee shop AU that reinterprets so many of the canon interpersonal conflicts in smart ways. It's going to stick with me because of LWJ's immediate reaction to finding WWX again after years of searching. "I live in this coffee shop now, because I'm never taking my eyes off that man again, thanks."

Some rare(r) pairs:

we can raise a little family by lanyon - Post-canon Jiang Cheng/Lan Xichen wish baby fic. Please read for Jiang Cheng's immediate tired dad-mode activation.

Four Days in Lanling by halotolerant - Post-canon, in which Jiang Cheng asks Nie Huaisang to help turn Jin Ling into the kind of sect leader who might actually survive, and spends a while remembering how NHS maneuvered him into playing a major part in raising Jin Ling in the first place. Plus some smut and feelings get confronted.

our footsteps sing a reckless serenade by ThirtySixSaveFiles - Modern city magic AU featuring an arranged marriage between Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang. Read to watch Jiang Cheng slowly fall in love with his brilliant and constantly underestimated husband while being forced to deal with politics and potential magical disaster. (Background Wangxian + Wen found family, even more backgrounder 3zun.) I think this one is going to be a major reread candidate.

I've spent all of the last week reading Untamed fic, to the shock of no one, I'm sure. There's so much in this fandom and it's all so good, so I'm definitely enjoying myself. One of my weaknesses already is modern AUs, which is unsurprising since I love AUs in general, and there's been some stunning character work on display, but there is one thing I've been a little surprised not to see come up yet, which is WWX's heavy drinking. Part of it, I think, is probably due to how unmarked heavy drinking is in classical Chinese lit in the first place, and thus probably also the historical drama sphere as well, although that's just a guess since I haven't watched that many. (The lit I feel fairly confident on, having taken a college course on it (in translation.)) Anyway, my point is this: in a modern context, I would interpret this as an effort at self-medication by a person with that always fun combination of giftedness + ADHD. My brother was on meds for his ADHD from a very young age, but he still drank *a lot* all through high school, and I just feel like there's something similar at play for our surface-cheerful genius cultivator who annoys all sect elders with his out-of-the-box thinking and unasked-for innovation. Good thing he grew up with the Jiangs, at least, where his innovation stood half a chance of being appreciated, Madam Yu's personal opinion of him notwithstanding.

I resisted getting into this fandom for months, largely because I didn't have time to watch something with subtitles and therefore couldn't multitask, but isolation crafting/writing finally screwed up my wrist enough that I needed a show to enforce idleness, so here I am, full of thoughts and feelings.
  • I'm told the book shows more of WWX at home in Lotus Pier, but one of the things that struck me in the show is how little he's shown ever being rooted in place, except for when he's living in the Burial Mounds with his found family of refugees... and even then, he lives in a cave apart from them, doing different work than everyone else, a point they mention explicitly. At almost all other times, we see him in inns and guest quarters in other people's houses. By contrast, we see LWJ in the Jingshi and the library of Cloud Recesses, two places where he seems rooted down to the bedrock. His desire to bring WWX to Cloud Recesses reads to me as a desire to not just protect him but also to give him the home he never seems to have--but of course the fact he lets WWX go to wander and waits for him to come back of his own free will proves he understands the kind of support WWX actually needs better than his father ever understood anything about his mother. (What is it with me and rooted/rootless characters?)
  • Things I need: art of LWJ as a modern goth. Because even before he was mourning WWX, WWX was commenting disparagingly about how he was always dressed for a funeral. I just want to see him with an umbrella and combat boots and, idk, grayscale? red? eyeshadow. Fingerless gloves. Everything still in white.
  • Nie Huaisang is fast becoming my favorite supporting character in fics.
